Our Curriculum Intent

“Rooted in community. Built for the future.”

At Bere Alston Primary Academy, our curriculum is designed for this place and these children.

Nestled in a rural village steeped in history, with a school dating back to 1665, we are proud of our heritage — but even more excited for the future. Our curriculum is bespoke to the children of Bere Alston. It is rich, relevant, ambitious, and grounded in a deep understanding of our pupils, our community, and the world they are growing up in.

We believe learning should inspire children — not only to know more, but to become more. From the moment they join us, we build strong relationships that support every child to thrive. We know our pupils well and understand what they need to succeed — academically, socially and emotionally.

A Curriculum with Purpose and Progression

Our curriculum has been carefully crafted to build both substantive knowledge (what children know) and disciplinary knowledge (how they think like a historian, a scientist, a geographer). Learning is deliberately sequenced to revisit and deepen understanding over time. Children are supported to develop metacognitive strategies — learning how to learn — so they can think more deeply, more critically, and more independently.

A Local Lens with a Global View

Through our curriculum, children explore the world around them through three lenses — local, national and global. Whether learning about the history of our village or the wider world, they are encouraged to see themselves as active, thoughtful citizens of every community they are part of — now and in the future.

Each term, our ‘Give Me 5’ agreements (we are kind and helpful; we are polite and we listen; we are honest; we are gentle, we are proud of our school) provide a shared focus for the whole school community. These values are lived out in our curriculum — guiding how we learn and how we treat others.

A Beautiful Place to Learn

Our stunning outdoor spaces are more than just a backdrop — they are a living part of the curriculum. We take learning outside wherever we can, making the most of our rural setting to spark curiosity, adventure and joy in learning.

We also embrace innovation. Technology is woven through our curriculum in purposeful ways — enhancing learning, supporting access, and preparing children for a digital future. From interactive tools to creative platforms, tech is used meaningfully to deepen learning and widen horizons.

A School That Grows Together

Bere Alston Primary Academy is a place where learning runs through the heart of the whole community. Our curriculum is not just what we teach — it’s how we grow, together. We work in close partnership with families, knowing that children thrive best when school and home work hand in hand.

We are ambitious for every child. Our curriculum supports them to become skilled, knowledgeable, kind and confident — ready to succeed wherever life takes them.

Bere Alston Primary Academy is more than a school. It’s a community where children are known, nurtured and inspired. Our curriculum is the foundation of that promise.
