PSHE

Personal, Social, and Health Education (PSHE)

At Bere Alston, PSHE isn’t just a lesson on the timetable; it is the heartbeat of our school. It runs intrinsically through everything we do, shaping how we grow, learn, and interact as a community.

Our Foundation: The 'Give Me 5' Agreements

Our school life is underpinned by our Give Me 5 Agreements. These values guide every interaction, lesson, and moment of the school day. We believe that PSHE is "caught" as much as it is taught, and our staff model these agreements constantly—turning every playground incident or classroom discussion into a meaningful learning opportunity.

The Jigsaw Curriculum

To ensure a rigorous and age-appropriate progression of skills, we follow the Jigsaw scheme of work. This mindful approach to PSHE is taught across the whole school, with all year groups exploring the same six themes simultaneously:

  • Being Me in My World: Understanding my role within the school and community.

  • Celebrating Difference: Valuing diversity, respect, and anti-bullying.

  • Dreams and Goals: Building resilience, aspirations, and self-belief.

  • Healthy Me: Making positive choices for physical and emotional well-being.

  • Relationships: Nurturing healthy, respectful connections with others.

  • Changing Me: Coping with change and preparing for the transition to adulthood.

Beyond the Classroom: Our Wider Community

We are proud of our place in the world. We teach our children that they are citizens of Bere Alston, Devon, and the wider global community. To ensure every child flourishes, we carefully map out Personal Development Opportunities throughout their time with us. These "Experience Maps" ensure that every student has access to a rich variety of life skills and community projects.
